When Should You Be Concerned About Hearing Loss?

It’s often easy to overlook issues with our health as we manage our day to day busy lives. However, knowing when to be concerned about hearing loss is essential to ensure it is detected early.

If left untreated, hearing loss could not only worsen but could also lead to other physical and emotional issues including cognitive decline, strained relationships and mental health problems.

In this blog, we talk about being aware of common signs and symptoms of hearing loss that could enable you to manage it earlier.

Knowing the signs of hearing loss

Hearing loss can present itself in various ways depending on the person and many symptoms are treatable such as an ear blockage or inner ear infection. Hearing loss causes come in many forms, and some of the causes are easy to resolve.

Don’t suffer in silence. Look out for common symptoms below and ask for advice and help if you are concerned.

1. Turning the volume up

2. Muffled background sounds like being underwater

3. Withdrawal from conversations

4. Asking people to repeat themselves

5. Avoiding social situations

6. Getting angry when people confront your hearing problem

7. Struggling to hear consonants

The good news is, no matter what the cause of the hearing loss, audiologists can often do something to help you manage this such as ear wax removal or using hearing aid technology.

What should you do if you have concerns about hearing loss?

1) Check your ear health
Audiologists are highly specialised in identifying and treating a range of hearing disorders. An audiologist can carry out a detailed consultation and ear check, and are highly trained in identifying and treating a range of hearing issues.

2) Get a hearing test
Depending on your concerns, hearing tests can be carried out on any age group but if you are over 50 years old, we would recommend having a regular hearing test. It’s a simple and quick routine check that can reassure you or pick up health issues early on.

3) Remove ear wax using micro suction or irrigation.
If you have an ear blockage, an audiologist can remove it safely from your ears. Using the safe and comfortable process of microsuction, our experienced clinician will examine your ear prior to treatment and will delicately remove any blockage using a fine low-pressure suction device. This is a procedure that should only be carried out by an experienced audiologist.

4) Get help with managing tinnitus
If you think you have tinnitus, a consultation with an experienced audiologist can help you discover what’s causing your tinnitus and help you find relief from your symptoms.

Hearing loss is more common than people think and is often not prioritised as a health concern for some people.  By knowing the signs of hearing loss and taking care of your ears, you can be proactive to managing this early on and ensuring peace of mind.

In recent years, there has been growing awareness of the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive decline, including dementia. Research suggests that untreated hearing loss is one of several modifiable risk factors for dementia . However, while this connection is well-documented, it's essential to understand the relationship without jumping to conclusions that hearing loss directly causes dementia. Instead, let's explore what the evidence shows and why addressing hearing difficulties early can have broader benefits for your health and well-being. The Research: What We Know Studies have consistently found a correlation between hearing loss and an increased risk of dementia. For example, a large-scale study by Johns Hopkins University found that people with mild hearing loss were twice as likely to develop dementia, while those with severe hearing loss were five times as likely. This relationship persists across multiple studies and populations. However, correlation does not equal causation. Hearing loss may not directly cause dementia but could contribute to it in various ways, including: Cognitive Load: Struggling to hear requires significant mental effort, diverting resources from other cognitive processes like memory and decision-making. Over time, this extra load might increase vulnerability to cognitive decline. Social Isolation: Hearing difficulties can lead to reduced social interactions, a known risk factor for dementia. Maintaining social connections is vital for brain health, and untreated hearing loss can sometimes create barriers to communication. Brain Structure Changes: Some studies suggest that hearing loss might accelerate brain atrophy in regions associated with memory and cognition, though this area requires further research. Why You Shouldn't Ignore Hearing Difficulties The good news is that taking action to address hearing loss may reduce these risks and improve overall quality of life. Treating hearing loss is about much more than improving hearing-it's about maintaining your cognitive, emotional, and social well-being. 1. Hearing Aids and Cognitive Health Hearing aids are a proven solution for many types of hearing loss. Research shows that individuals who use hearing aids are more likely to stay socially active and may experience slower rates of cognitive decline compared to those who don't treat their hearing loss. Hearing aids can help reduce the mental strain associated with hearing difficulties, allowing your brain to focus on other important functions. 2. Better Communication, Better Relationships Untreated hearing loss can strain relationships and lead to frustration in daily life. Addressing hearing difficulties early can help you stay connected to loved ones, reducing feelings of isolation and promoting a sense of belonging. 3. Early Intervention Matters Hearing loss is often gradual, and many people wait years before seeking help. However, the earlier you act, the better the outcomes. Regular hearing checks can identify issues early, making treatment simpler and more effective. --- Book a Hearing Test at Our Clinics If you're ready to take the first step towards better hearing and overall health, we're here to help.
