During the summer holiday season, we often find ourselves spending much more time in water. Whether it’s swimming in our local North Wales seaside resorts or extra showers to cool down, getting water stuck in your ear can be really uncomfortable.
While it’s often a minor inconvenience or can often solve itself, it can cause discomfort especially in children. If it’s left untreated it could also cause more issues. Here is a step by step guide to removing unwanted water that is stuck in your ears.
Water can become trapped inside the ear canal due to many reasons. The main reason is due to water getting stuck in narrow or curved ear canals. Some people have smaller ear canals and the shape inside the ear can make it easier for water to get stuck.
It could also be due to a buildup of earwax. Water can get trapped behind excessive earwax that’s obstructing the ear canal and can therefore become difficult to run back out.
If water is stuck in your ear or your child’s ear, you may experience the following symptoms:
In most cases the water will run out of the ear within a short time. These tips should help you to clear the water yourself:
Head tilt: Tilt your head on the side of the blocked ear facing downwards. Gravity can help to release the water naturally with very little effort. You could also try this method lying down on the side of the affected ear under a towel and allow the water to flow out.
Jiggle your earlobes: Gently pull and jiggle your earlobe on the affected ear. Sometimes this rapid movement helps to straighten the ear canal and release the water from the ear.
Cupping the ear: Press your hand flat on the affected ear to create a gentle suction movement. This vacuum effect can sometimes help to draw out and release water.
Over the counter solutions: A medical professional may recommend ear drops that dry out the ears and help to release trapped water. It’s important that you explain your symptoms to the pharmacist before using over the counter ear drops.
If the trapped water persists or if it becomes uncomfortable then it’s important that you see a medical professional such as an audiologist or your GP. Systems such as persistent pain, pressure that doesn’t go away, or any symptoms of an ear infection are signs that you shouldn’t ignore.
You should also prevent your ears from getting worse during your holiday by drying your ears thoroughly and protecting your ears when swimming.
Getting water stuck in your ears is very common and often a minor issue that is resolved quickly. Make sure you address any symptoms quickly through the ‘at home’ tips or by seeking professional help where necessary.
