As the summer season approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate the season of festivals, holidays, spending extra time with loved ones, attending celebrations and travelling. However, if you have hearing loss, the summer holidays can be a struggle. By being prepared, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the summer just like everyone else.
Here are some tips to ensure you are well-prepared for the sunny season.
1. Protect your ears
Whether you’re heading to a music festival, a loud pub garden, or a busy beach, high noise levels are expected. Try to plan ahead and choose places that would be hearing friendly such as quieter restaurants and spacious outdoor locations. Avoid overly crowded places as they could make it more difficult for you to communicate. If a noisy environment is inevitable use earplugs or noise cancelling headphones to allow you to enjoy the experience at a lower volume.
2. Make Others Aware
Although your family and friends are likely to be aware of your hearing issues, it’s always worth reminding them in advance of big events. If you’re attending celebrations, make sure to ask for accommodations that will help you such as sitting in quieter social areas or being nearer to the speakers for speeches. Most people will be understanding and you’ll benefit by being more comfortable.
3. Use visual cues
Parties are often dimly lit or dark making it difficult to see other people clearly. Try to use exaggerated visual and lip cues to help people understand what you are saying and position yourself in areas that are brightly lit so that you can see visual cues from others.
4. Be prepared for air pressure changes
If you’re flying this summer, be mindful of the impact of air pressure changes on your ears, which can cause discomfort and temporary hearing issues. To alleviate this you can chew gum or swallow to help lower the ear pressure.
5. Get Your Hearing Checked
Before you go on holiday or attend large events, have a hearing check up. The audiologist could check that your hearing aids and settings are up to date, clean your devices and set up any new technology to help you.
By incorporating some of these simple practices into your routine, you can enjoy all that the season has to offer without compromising your ear health.
