As the use of alternative and complementary medicine grows in popularity, many are proven to be safe and effective, but not all of them. Hopi ear candling, a popular procedure that claims to remove ear wax blockages from the ear, is one treatment that lacks evidence to back up its claims.
Ear candles, believed to have derived from American Indian tribes, claim to be a therapeutic solution for ear wax removal and blockages. Today, there are a variety of ear candle types including hopi which is the most common.
Hopi ear candles are typically around 10 inches long in a cylindrical shape and include a filter. As the patient lies on their side the ear candle is inserted into the ear and lit alight to start the treatment. The theory behind them is that they suck out any wax and debris in the ear but there is little scientific proof to back this up.
Not only is there little evidence that hopi ear candles are effective but there are also studies to show that they could make a blocked ear worse and cause more problems than they solve.
There are no restrictions in the UK currently for this treatment but some studies show that ear candles can do more harm than good. The US Food and Drink Association (FDA) in America state that ear candling is not a safe practice and studies have warned against the risks.*
Potential side effects of hopi ear candles could include risk of burns on the skin from hot wax dripping, damage to the middle ear and perforated ear drums.
Having blocked ears is one of the most common ear conditions and most of the time it can be solved with quick and easy treatment. Microsuction is one of the safest and most effective ear wax removal treatments and in most cases the blockage is removed in minutes. Experienced audiologists with training in aural microsuction ear wax removal perform this procedure.
Microsuction does not involve the use of liquids, so there is no mess and no fuss. The ear is examined prior to the procedure and the blockage will be removed using a fine low-pressure suction device. A video otoscope will be used to show you the condition of the ear before and after the treatment.
