The Christmas party season is around the corner and although it is meant to be fun, it can be a stressful time for hearing aid users. Invites to noisy parties and gathering with lots of people may be daunting if you have hearing loss, but the season should be fun for you too. The good news is, there are lots of ways you can enjoy parties and gatherings, even with hearing loss issues.
Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the festive season this year.
If you’re attending a Christmas party, plan ahead and let the host know in advance about your hearing loss and anything they can do to help. A good host wants their guests to enjoy themselves so you shouldn’t be afraid of making requests that will make you feel more comfortable. When you arrive at the event let others know about your hearing loss. Most people will appreciate knowing and will do what they can to accommodate.
If you’re in a party with loud music or lots of loud voices, it can make it even more difficult to hear. If you’re at someone’s home politely ask them if they can turn down the music or TV. Most people won’t mind and they may not know that it’s affecting you in a negative way. Often it’s the background noise at parties such as Christmas music or TV that is the most annoying.
Parties are often dimly lit or dark making it difficult to see other people clearly. Try to use exaggerated visual and lip cues to help people understand what you are saying and position yourself in areas that are brightly lit so that you can see visual cues from others.
If you’re talking one to one with someone, try to find a quieter area away from music and noise where you’ll be able to hear the other person talking. If you’re at someone’s home this could be outside on the porch or in another room. Try to avoid talking near small children as they can get loud, especially if they are excited or in a group.
If you’re having a sit down meal, pick someone you trust who knows about your hearing loss and who can share information with you. Try not to get involved in too many conversations at one time and ask your trusted friend to tell you any information you may have missed or ask them to repeat what someone has said. This should help you feel more comfortable and confident in joining in the conversations.
