As we enter a brand new year, it’s the ideal time to reset our goals and prioritise our health for the year ahead.
Although most people focus on their physical health during this time, it’s important not to forget about your hearing health too. Improving your hearing could have a positive impact on your health overall.
Here are 4 ways you could improve your hearing in 2023;
1. Protect Your Hearing
Take care to protect your ears this year. One of the best ways to reduce the chances of hearing loss is to avoid loud noises, whether that’s the TV, radio or sounds around the home. Any sound over 85 decibels can cause hearing loss (equivalent to a garden lawnmower) and frequent exposure to loud noise can have a lasting effect. Ear protectors can be used to protect your ears against exposure to very loud noises. There are also sound metre apps available to download onto your phone that can help you to measure the sound around you.
2. Maintain Your Hearing Aids
If you are already a hearing aid user, make sure to regularly maintain the hearing aids that you already have. If you’ve had them for a long time it would be beneficial to bring them into the clinic for maintenance and cleaning. This will ensure they are still fit for purpose and are working to their full potential. It also gives you the opportunity to hear about the latest technology and to see if any other hearing aids would suit your current needs better.
3. Don’t Clean Your Ears
It’s fine to clean the outside of your ears using a damp cloth or cotton wool but try not to clean the inside. Your ears are naturally self-cleaning so putting items in the ears can increase the risk of ear infections and damage.
Make sure ear plugs and in-ear headphones are cleaned before use. If you are worried that your ears may be blocked with wax, talk to a healthcare professional first. They may prescribe a softening solution or recommend microsuction ear wax removal.
4. Have A Hearing Test
A hearing test may be beneficial to you, especially if you are having hearing issues, regardless of your age. If you’re concerned about your hearing or hearing loss, don’t ignore it, get in-touch with a hearing professional. Our experienced audiologists can help to advise you on any hearing issue including hearing tests and examinations.
