According to the National Tinnitus Association, Tinnitus is not just ringing in the ears but most commonly can also be buzzing, hissing, whistling or any sound. The sensation and sounds can come and go or be there constantly and can vary in volume.
Tinnitus can have a huge impact on your everyday life and is becoming more common by the day. If you’re tired or stressed, tinnitus symptoms can become worse and harder to control. The sound can get louder and the frequency can change.
Although it can’t be cured, there are many ways that an Audiologist can help you with tinnitus. A consultation with our experienced hearing clinicians can help you discover what’s causing your tinnitus and help you find relief from your symptoms.
The first point of call would be to check if there is anything obvious causing the tinnitus such as a blockage or any oil on the ear drum. Using an in-ear camera, we can show you the inside of your ear and can carry out a middle ear test to try and eliminate the obvious.
Sometimes, signs of tinnitus could simply be due to a blockage of ear wax. The tinnitus is caused as the external sounds are blocked from reaching the ear drum which makes the internal sounds more noticeable. Microsuction ear wax removal will safely and effectively remove this for you.
If the tinnitus isn’t ear wax then a middle ear test could be carried out. At this stage we will discuss various solutions bespoke to your individual situation. We can give you advice and a plan for your own tinnitus management which could include hearing aid solutions and wellbeing advice to follow at home.
Here are some tips that you can follow at home to help relieve the signs of tinnitus;
1) Distract Yourself
Taking time to do things that you enjoy that will distract you from thinking about your tinnitus. When you keep yourself busy you’re less likely to notice the sounds in your ears.
2) Relax
Take part in relaxing activities such a yoga, walking or mindfulness. Your tinnitus will be less noticeable when you are not stressed.
3) Listen To Soothing Sounds
Listen to calming music that compliments your tinnitus such as the sounds of waves or sounds of nature. Associating your tinnitus with soothing sounds can help your tinnitus to feel more pleasant.
